Tukwila, WA – Sounders Women announced today the signing of World Cup star, Megan Rapinoe for the 2012 season.
The University of Portland product has played 47 matches and scored 12 goals for Team U.S.A. Rapinoe is best known for her success in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. During the quarterfinal match against Brazil, Rapinoe came on as a sub and lofted a cross into the box for Abby Wambach’s game-tying, extra-time header. Megan would later convert her shot during the penalty shootout to help send the United States to the semifinals in a miraculous fashion.
Rapinoe went on to notch two more assists in the World Cup semi-finals and finals against France and Japan respectively. She ended the tournament with 1 goal and 3 assists.
“Megan is one of the most entertaining players in the game today,” said Sounders Women General Manager, Amy Carnell. “A difference maker in the 2011 World Cup, Megan plays with a level of flair and passion that is rarely seen. Watching Megan you learn to expect the unexpected, raw emotion and pure guts to the final whistle is what you get.”
Megan Rapinoe was one of the only players in the University of Portland’s history to get 30 goals and 25 assists in a career. Her 88 point career (30 goals, 28 assists) is the 10th in the school’s history despite playing just 60 total games due to injuries.
Following her Portland career, Rapinoe was selected 2nd overall in the 2009 WPS Draft to Chicago Red Stars. In the inaugural 2009 season of WPS, Megan was named a Women’s Professional Soccer First-Team All-Star. She spent last season with the Philadelphia Independence and eventually MagicJack of WPS.
“Stemming from her leadership and success at the University of Portland, Megan has continued to evolve and grow into one of the most exciting, unpredictable, creative, and flashy players in the women’s game,” said Sounders Women Head Coach, Michelle French.
Rapinoe has been selected to the 23 player roster for the U.S. National Team’s upcoming friendlies in Japan. The Redding, California native made her first appearance with the National Team in 2006.
In October 2011, Rapinoe signed with W-League (Australia) team Sydney FC as a guest player for 2 playoff matches. In the league championship she scored with eight minutes remaining to seal the victory for Sydney FC.
Megan will be available for 4-5 Home matches & 1 away match in coordination with USWNT Olympic Training Camp & sponsor commitments. Her signing is pending USSF approval.
