Sounders Women experience Kansas City

Sounders Women travel to KC for pre-season experience, open WPSL Sunday

The Sounders Women traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to take on the two time defending NWSL Champions, FC Kansas City as well as WPSL partners, KC Courage.  Both games were played this week as the Sounders Women prepare to open the 2016 WPSL season this Sunday, May 22nd against Vancouver NSGSC at Starfire Sports Stadium at 12pm.

Arriving in Kansas City on Tuesday May 17th, the Sounders Women suited up against FC Kansas City on Wednesday, May 18th.  The game was steady and even through the first half as Cassie Miller was busy in goal for the Sounders Women making saves and keeping the professional side off the score sheet for most of the half.   Half time score was 1-0 in favor of the defending NWSL National Champions.  The second half showed the professional prowess of FC Kansas City with the pro side scoring four goals and teaching the young Sounders Women team the difference between the levels.   Becky Sauerbraun, US National Team defender and current captain for FC Kansas City, delivered a postgame talk to the Sounders Women.

On Thursday, May 19th, the Sounders Women played KC Courage in the second game on the trip to middle America.   KC Courage is the local WPSL team and the Sounders Women league counterpart for the trip.  The women wasted no time with Becca Candler getting on the board early to make the score line 1-0 in favor of the Sounders Women.  Izzy Ferrell would go on to score two goals before Candler would find her second in the match.  Kaycie Tillman would notch goal number five off an assist from Olivia Van der Jagt to complete the scoring in a 5-0 victory for the Sounders Women side.

The Sounders Women have operated as a developmental platform for nearly two decades and this foray in to the WPSL offers a new league with the same initiative.  Traveling to Kansas City produced a snapshot for the young players into the professional game and allowed for two great pre-season friendly games as the club works toward the Player First Initiative where they work to develop players so that they move up into the professional ranks of the game.

“We are very happy with the trip and we hope the women enjoyed the opportunity,” said Sounders Women Co-Owner Cliff McElroy, “Giving players the experience of the next level is important as they work toward their final objective.”

The Sounders Women open the WPSL season this Sunday, May 22nd at 12pm at Starfire Sports Stadium.  Tickets can be purchased online at:  http://www.eventzilla.net/web/event/2016-flex-tickets-2138834073 or at the gate on Sunday.   Come check out the future of the women’s game!
